Mary Ann Gaido for Mayor of Irvine
I’d like to personally thank you for being a part of my campaign for Mayor or Irvine. While many of us are feeling sad, angry, frustrated and unsettled – myself included – I remain so proud of our truly grass-roots campaign and all of you who participated.
The results of the Irvine Mayoral election did not give us the result we wanted. This “second place” position is especially hard, since we really put our heart and soul into these last eight months. You have been with me, helping create a true team spirit as you generously shared your resources, knowledge and skill sets and hours of walking, talking and assembling materials for voters. You put up lawn signs, you wrote letters; you “spread the word,” and you helped keep my spirits high during the onslaught of negative messaging. You gave it your all, and for that I am sincerely grateful. My heart goes out to you!
I know one thing for sure: We have awakened a sleeping giant! It became apparent during the course of the campaign that Irvine residents agreed with our message of “time out” from overdevelopment of our master-planned city.
So while the over $1.1 million of dark money from developers funneled through various PACS to support a mayoral candidate of their liking and to oppose me with a deluge of vicious lies, name-calling and groundless accusations, it was our message that resonated with voters.
So where do we go from here? Please join me in continuing to engage in local civic life, to push back against new General Plan changes that result in even more traffic congestion, air pollution, classroom overcrowding and degradation of our quality of life.
Again, thank you; thank you! It’s been such a privilege working with you!
Mary Ann Gaido
Candidate for Irvine Mayor
